Minimum Stall Size

Minimum Stall Size According to ADA Standards, the minimum clear floor dimensions for a wheelchair-accessible toilet compartment are:

Width:
At least 60 inches measured perpendicular to the side wall.

Depth:
56 inches if the toilet is wall-mounted.
59 inches if the toilet is floor-mounted.

These measurements are specified in ADA Section 213 and help ensure sufficient space for a wheelchair to enter, maneuver, and perform a 180° turn if necessary.

Rationale:
These minimum dimensions ensure that users can comfortably transfer from their wheelchair to the toilet. Adequate space is critical for mobility and safety, reducing the risk of falls during transfers

Turning Space & Door Clearance

A full 60-inch turning circle is required within the restroom to allow a wheelchair user to make a complete turn. This turning space may be provided within the compartment or in the common area of a single-user restroom.

Door Clearance:
The door must yield at least 32 inches of clear opening width to 90°. In multi-user restrooms, this often means using an outswing door to avoid interference with the internal clear space.

Rationale:
Adequate turning space and door clearance are essential for preventing accidents and ensuring that individuals with mobility impairments can navigate the restroom without hindrance. These provisions reduce the risk of collision with fixtures or other users.
